Hi Reader What’s hiding in your pantry? When I filled out my own pantry inventory sheet recently, I’ll be honest – there were a few surprises. A couple of ingredients I’d bought for a “special” recipe I never actually made, and a packet of those ultra-low-calorie noodles I really wanted to like… but let’s just say they didn’t make the cut. Doing the inventory was a bit of an eye-opener. It helped me see where food (and money!) was slipping through the cracks – and just getting a handle on it has made a huge difference to how much we waste and what we spend on groceries. This isn’t new territory for me. I’ve been working on reducing food waste and eating more sustainably for years – it’s something I genuinely care about. Along the way, I’ve picked up an award for my sustainability efforts and have been featured in The Huffington Post, Sainsbury’s Magazine, and a few environmental publications too. If you’re looking for an easy next step, here’s a quick win: print out my 10 Top Tips to Cut Food Waste and stick it on your fridge. It’s full of simple ideas that really work. And just to put it in perspective — if food waste were a country, it would be the third biggest emitter of greenhouse gases in the world, right after the USA and China. Shocking, isn’t it? I know many in my parents’ generation are already pretty savvy about avoiding waste (the post-war “make-do” mindset never really left them), but for the rest of us — or for friends and family who might need a little nudge — it’s a good reminder. Plus, cutting food waste can save the average household around £1,000 a year in the UK (or about $1,600 in the US). Not bad for a few small changes. Tag me if you give the inventory sheet a go or let me know what surprise you find -I'd love to know how you're getting on.
